Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis
(B.I.A. - Body Impedance Analysis / Biolectrical Impedance Analysis)
Of all the non invasive techniques, the most recent and innovative for application in research in the most diverse branches of medicine is the evaluation of body composition by means of impedance measurement.
This method enables the doctor to analyse the patientıs body composition in a matter of seconds thanks to an instrument (impedance analyser) developed by our Research Centre which uses a sophisticated software package.
The system operates on the basis of the "injection" of a non invasive low frequency electrical current which is transmitted through electrodes in gel placed on the hand and foot of the patient.
It is distinguished from the plicometric method by the speed of the analysis and the fact that it makes it possible to evaluate body water which otherwise would not be measurable. There is no need to manipulate the patient as in the case of skinfolds method. The patient is extremely compliant both as a result of the technological quality of the analysis and the completeness of the results. The technique which has been used to date for total body analysis, is now starting to yield satisfactory results in the field of body assessing for body fat distribution as well.
Therefore, it can be seen that skinfold method and impedance measurement are techniques which complement one another without obliging the doctor to choose one method of analysis over the other.
